Dry Eye Q & A

What is dry eye?

Dry eye is an eye disease in which your eyes can’t make tears that keep your eyes properly lubricated. Your tears have three layers: water, oil, and mucus. Every time you blink, these layers coat your eye, keeping it moist and comfortable.

When you have dry eye, you may not make enough tears, or there’s a change in the quality of your tears.

You can develop dry eye from a number of causes, including the use of certain medications, underlying medical conditions (blepharitis), or environmental exposures. Dry eye is also common in people following refractive eye surgery.

Your risk of developing dry eye increases as you get older.

What are the symptoms of dry eye?

With dry eye, your eyes may feel gritty and scratchy. Other symptoms include:

  • Burning sensation
  • Red and itchy eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Blurry vision
  • Stringy mucus

Watery eyes are also a common symptom of dry eye.

What can I expect during a dry eye exam?

You can expect a comprehensive evaluation when you come in for a dry eye exam at Eye Q Optique. The team starts by asking detailed questions about your daily routine, medical  history, types of medications you take, and your eye health history.

The team examines your eyes, checks your vision, and performs a tear test. During the tear test, they check to see the amount of tears your eyes produce and how long it takes for your eyes to dry out.

The team also evaluates the structure of your eyelids, looking for conditions that might contribute to your symptoms, such as a clogged oil gland.

What treatments can help dry eye?

The team at Eye Q Optique customizes treatment for your dry eye depending on the cause.

More and more people have dry eye because they spend too much time staring at an electronic screen, forgetting to blink. In these cases, the team recommends taking frequent breaks from the screen to reduce symptoms.

Other treatments for dry eye include:

  • Over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription eye drops
  • Tear duct plugs to stop tears from draining too quickly

The team at Eye Q Optique works closely with you, developing a dry eye plan that eases your symptoms and improves your quality of life.
